PowerDrive Racing (PDR) made their grand entrance into the racing world on Easter weekend, taking on their first-ever race at the Mini Challenge Clubsport. David Taylor entrusted PDR with his beloved #28 Mini Cooper R50, a compact powerhouse, hoping their magic touch would translate into a successful race weekend. And what a weekend it was!
Early Preparations
Arriving at the circuit early, PowerDrive found themselves in a race against time before even
setting foot on the track. The #28 Mini needed some serious attention, with a new clutch slave
and anti-roll bar to be installed and a general tidy-up required to ensure the car was race ready.
With our sleeves rolled up, the atmosphere in the garage was electric and by the end of the day,
the car was prepped and ready to tackle the weekend’s challenges.
Race One
With the car finally ready to go, David lined up on the grid for Race 1. The tension was palpable
as the lights went out, and the roar of the engines signalled the start of the season. Despite the
earlier rush to prepare, David showed incredible skill and composure on the track. He pushed
the car, engaging in some intense battles for his position. His efforts paid off with a well-earned
P3 finish in the Cooper class, securing what would be a podium on his first outing. It was a
fantastic start to the weekend, and the team’s hard work was beginning to show results.
Race Two
Despite being on a high from Race 1, the unpredictability of motorsport brought a tough
challenge to Race 2. Everything was going smoothly until disaster struck at the notorious
Paddock Hill Bend. The #28 Mini Cooper, in a fierce battle for position, locked up and became
beached in the gravel trap. David was unable to limp out of the trap and required recovery. His
quick thinking, however, prevented a serious incident by succumbing to the trap and not
engaging a roll! This meant the race ended abruptly for David and PDR with a DNF. It was a
bitter pill to swallow, but the team’s spirit remained unshaken, and all focus went onto Race 3.
Race Three
With the disappointment of Race 2 behind them, the team was determined to make a strong
comeback in the final race of the weekend. The atmosphere was tense, but the resolve was
strong. David and the #28 Mini were back on track with redemption on their mind. Battling
through the race duration, they clinched a P4 finish in class, a solid recovery that showcased grit
and determination by both driver and team.
Reflections
The debut weekend for PDR was a rollercoaster of emotions – marked by thrilling highs and
challenging lows. The P3 finish in the first race was a fantastic achievement, setting a strong
tone for the team’s future. The DNF in Race 2 was a strong reminder of the unpredictable nature
of racing but it also highlighted the importance of perseverance. The P4 finish in Race 3 was a
reinforcing moment demonstrating the team’s capabilities.
As the team packed up and looked towards future races, one thing is clear: PowerDrive Racing
is here to make its mark in the racing world. Their first race weekend was just the beginning of what promises to be an exhilarating journey.
